Neon Genesis Evangelion

Of course, I got turned on to this one by a co-worker, who - and here the ugly beast of jealousy rears his gory head - speaks Japanese and can watch Eva videos without needing subtitles. Keep in mind that at the time I worked for a Japanese company, people would come back from trips with the occasional anime-related item all the time.

It all started when I looked at a picture of an Angel and went, "Hey! That looks cool! What show is it from?"

After watching about half the series (12 episodes), so I'd seen some events (in flashback) of 2000 A.D. (the series itself takes place 15 years later), I gave up, admitted my addiction to my friends, and bought tapes from Anime Nation's web site.

I've now seen all of the series - that's 22 episodes, 11 one-hour subtitled tapes, plus the feature film series finale.

I've already said I hate dubbing, but I'll wax darkly poetic on that subject later, I'm sure. With this show, you think you know what's going on, and you've seen some very....interesting things happen, but it's all - delightfully - murky and confusing and tantalizing. I love shows that do that, and I don't understand why American animators have gotten sucked into 'kiddie programs'. The original Bugs Bunny was a wiseass with adult material. Now, animated = children's programming. Phooey.

Characters

So far, my favorite character is Misato. Though, my co-worker said I reminded him most of Ritsuko - who I also like quite a bit more than I did the first time I watched the series. I've gotten to see a couple episodes that really brought her to the forefront.

Yes, there was a strong superficial resemblance at the time - the short blond hair, glasses, scientist working with computers. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Of course, I like the self-effacing Ayanami Rei, but I may be the only fan on Earth whose favorite character ISN'T Ayanami. I had the misfortune of originally suffering through a dubbed version of 'Beyond Rei's Heart', a particularly Ayanami-heavy episode, but the voices and intonation where just WRONG. I had to bite a knuckle to not scream.

But then, I had to bite a knuckle to not scream at some particularly good parts, too.

Fandom

Eva's got all the great themes: strained interpersonal relationships, a post-apocalyptic world, work and societal pressures, really big battles, desperation, youthful hormones, maybe messengers from God, and you could use a dump truck to deliver the angst. My kinda show.

AnimeNation
Okay, I've had a good experience with A.N. so far, ordered Eva tapes from them to be shipped via ground, happened to place a book order with Amazon.com within a day or so, and got my books and videos on the very same day, about a week later. Great!
